Our editors have filled our homes with nontoxic and sustainable furniture for a decade. These are our favorite washable rugs for a range of budgets.
Picture this: Someone spills juice on the living room rug and you don’t have to panic, running for the towels and the stain remover in seconds flat. Instead, you can just pop it in the wash. 🌟
The washable rug market has plenty of options these days, which we love for both their practicality and their sustainability specs. Many are unfussy, made of natural materials like pure cotton, and give your home a vibe that’s as laid-back as it is chic. And since they’re washable, you’ll get years and years of use out of them — and sometimes a whole lifetime.
For homes that are stylish but not precious, check out some of our favorite brands making cute, sustainable, washable rugs below.
Why is a nontoxic rug important?
When you go to a big box store, the rugs are typically made of synthetic fabrics, and sometimes with flame retardants, glues, or harsh dyes. Or they’re made of materials that can’t always be machine-washed, like wool or jute. Washable rugs often get you the best of both worlds — natural fabrics with no sketchy materials added.
What materials should you look for in a washable rug?
When rug shopping, we prioritize natural materials like organic cotton and wool for their low environmental impact. Next come more eco-friendly synthetics made of recycled fibers or bamboo. Not only will these materials get you a highly durable rug — they’re also often machine-washable. We also look for transparent specs about where a rug was made and by whom, and prioritize supporting small businesses and artisans whenever possible.
Our criteria:
Our team has tested the following list in our own homes, researched the product materials, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to finalize our list of the best nontoxic rugs for a healthy and sustainable home. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet the below criteria:
- SUSTAINABLE/NONTOXIC | All of the brands on this list refrain from using hazardous chemicals in their production processes, and use natural and sustainable materials like organic cotton and wool for safety and softness wherever possible.
- DURABLE | Since these options are all made with natural and high-quality materials, your rug will last for many years to come — without degrading as you wash it.
- WIDE RANGE OF STYLES & SIZES | Whether you’re looking for a runner, playmat, or an area rug, we’ve got you covered in all those areas and more!

2. Lorena Canals

Sustainable materials | Non-toxic dyes, wool, cotton
Prices for a ~6Ă—9 starting at | $549
Lorena Canals is the designer behind her namesake rug brand, committed to hand-making rugs of natural materials that can be washed in the washing machine since 1998. Sustainability has always been the name of their game, and today, their lineup includes rugs made of cotton, wool, or a combination of the two — but all are machine washable. Their designs lean playful and minimalistically chic, and all their fibers are dyed in non-toxic dyes before being handspun into rugs at their artisan workshop in India. They have a fantastic lineup of kids’ rugs, too, with designs that are interactive, like this Path of Nature play rug, or quirky, like this washable chicken rug. And Lorena Canals has a new RugCycled line that turns their production scraps into new rugs, so the brand is well on its way to being zero waste.
Editor Review | “Lorena Canals’ commitment to sustainability and quality intrigued me, prompting me to try out one of their Woolable rugs. The rug, from a collaboration with designer Donna Wilson, surpassed my expectations in both luxury and style, seamlessly fitting into my home’s decor. Comparing it to other washable rug brands like Ruggable, Lorena Canals stood out for its superior quality and ethical production practices. While I learned the importance of proper laundry equipment sizing the hard way, I was super impressed by Lorena Canals’ eco-friendly and chic rug collection.” – Emily McGowan (Read the full review.)

3. Hook & Loom
Best For | Undyed rugs

Hook & Loom is the only rug company currently making rugs of eco cotton, made from true recycled cotton fabrics spun down into yarns and then re-woven into super sustainable rugs. 5. Revival Rugs
Best For | Artistic designs
Sustainable materials | Recycled polyester, wool, recycled denim
Prices for a ~6Ă—9 starting at | $299
Revival Rugs might be known for their highly curated selection of secondhand, vintage rugs, made between 30 and 100 years ago and meticulously restored to look as good as — or sometimes better than — new. But if you’re in the market for a washable rug, Revival does that, too. Their washable rugs are fantastic at balancing tasteful design with fair prices, and they’re all handmade by the brand’s artisan partners in Morocco, Turkey, and India. Some, like the Helen, are made of washable wool sourced from New Zealand and hand-knotted into a minimalistic floral pattern. Others, like the Bloom or the Willow, are made of a 100% recycled polyester woven into a textured pattern. And others still, like the Topstich, are made of repurposed denim that make the rug as durable as it is sustainable. Revival’s rug designs tend to incorporate contrasting textures, for creating space with visual interest and artwork that isn’t just on your walls.

Their rugs come in nine different colors (one of which is this adorable multi-stripe pattern), all of which are dyed with non-toxic dyes, and each color comes in eight different standard sizes — although the brand does custom sizing, too. All of their fabric is milled and sewn in Portugal, and the rugs are then handwoven at a family-run workshop in Ohio for a super low carbon footprint from beginning to end — and an ethical process you can feel good about. The wool-like fibers are then hand-loomed in Peru for low-impact production all around. The rugs come in both solid and two-toned colorways that elevate any space. And along with being sustainably and ethically made, the rugs are durable and washable.
